Outdoor Kitchen Surfaces

Outdoor Kitchen and Grill Station Tops in Asheville

A covered porch counter takes weather that an indoor top never sees. At Asheville elevation that means real freeze and thaw cycling through the winter, hard afternoon sun in summer, and enough humidity to keep a poorly chosen surface damp for days. Omnicircus builds outdoor surfaces with those conditions in mind.

Materials That Belong Outside

Granite and quartzite are the two we recommend most. Both are dense natural stone, both handle temperature swings without complaint, and both take a grill station without a heat shield problem. Soapstone is another good option and weathers to a soft patina.

Engineered quartz is the one to avoid outdoors. The resin binder that makes it so durable inside is vulnerable to ultraviolet light, and over a couple of seasons in direct sun it can yellow and expand unevenly. Manufacturers void the warranty for exterior use, and we will not install it on an uncovered surface.

Support and Drainage

Outdoor base cabinets need to shed water. We check that the frame drains and that the counter has a slight fall away from the house, so rain and melting snow do not sit in a seam. Any overhang for seating gets the same bracket support we would use on an indoor island, because a wet stone top is not the place to find out the corbels were undersized.

Around the Grill

We keep the correct clearance around a drop in grill so heat does not bear directly on the stone edge, and we cut the opening to your unit rather than a generic dimension. Bring us the grill spec sheet at the measure and it saves a return trip.
